Editor’s column  –  Fall 2013

Our fall issue begins with Larry Gragg’s article about Jack Entratter, the iconic entertainment director of Las Vegas’s Sands Hotel in the 1950s and ‘60s, who was one of the people most responsible for the city’s rise as the “Entertainment Capital” of the nation.

Another southern Nevada-related story is Phil Earl’s look at the infamous career of Queho, the so-called Paiute renegade who cut a violent swath through the Eldorado Country at the beginning of the twentieth century. Crime of a different sort is discussed in Sally Zanjani’s article about Prohibition in Nevada and the efforts by her father, U.S. Attorney George Springmeyer, to enforce federal anti-liquor laws, while Guy Clifton tells us about two colorful Reno authors and their photography books that document change in the city.  Joe Zentner gives us a look at Rhyolite, from boomtown to ghost town, and our “Exploring the Silver State” feature showcases the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko, one of Nevada’s best and most unusual museums.

Many of our readers know about websites, such as that of the Nevada Observer, which offer historical material about the state, but one that may be overlooked is the e-publishing site smashwords.com. Anyone interested in the history of central Nevada might want to go there and check out Edward Slagle’s recent authoritative articles on Austin pioneer David E. Buel, Lysander and Noble Getchell and their Betty O’Neal Mine, and James Q.C. van den Bosch, an important early mining figure of the Reese River country.

You may already have noticed that our address has changed. The building we have had our office in since 2010 was recently sold and we had to find a new location for our world headquarters. We are now situated at 846 Victorian Avenue (Suite 24H) in Sparks, on the second floor of the Great Basin Brewing Company building. Our hours will be limited – 10-12 Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and by appointment, but we are always glad to see visitors.

We hope your summer wasn’t quite as hectic as ours, and that you’ll have a great fall – as Nevada’s sesquicentennial celebration begins.
